Judaism, Christianity and Islam as well as Indian and Far Eastern religious like
Buddhism and Sikhism, Iranic religions like Zoroastrianism and Bahai, and

Atheism and the Mormon church have also developed with time. While religion
dictates peace and goodwill, many battles and divisions have taken place
because of religion.

of the world could benefit from learning about the different types of religion.
The Major Religions in Nigeria
The major religions in Nigeria are Islam and Christianity.
Islam: Before the prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.) Arab Communities believed in
multiple God while at the same time a unity of one God. The origins of Islam
go back to the creation of the world and every prophet who came into this world
was to be accepted as God’s messenger. Muslims believe that revelation were
made through all the prophets that entered the world, but that Muhammad
(P.B.U.) made that final absolute revelation which marks the official rise of
Islam in Makkah.
One night in 610 as he was meditating in a cave on mount Hira, the Angel
appeared to him and Muhammad (P.B.U.) began reciting what he believed were
the words of God. This occurred throughout his life. The word were eventually
recorded into the holy Quran and Muhammad (P.B.U.) began preaching God
words. When Muhammad (P.B.U.) proclaimed the message that the people
must believe in one God, many retaliated and planned to kill him. Because of
terrible living conditions and isolation, Muhammad (P.B.U.) took His followers
and migrated to Madina in 622 A.D. The journey is called the HIJRA or
PILGRIMAGE and mark the Muslim New year. A few years later, Muhammad
(P.B.U.) has an astonishing numbers of followers and began to spread his
message at a faster rate. Muhammad (P.B.U.) returned to Makkah with over
10,000 followers and conquered the land after a bloodless battle. Muhammad
(P.B.U.) death in 632 A. D. was a catastrophic event for Muslim.
CHRISTIANITY: Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the Holy land to a virgin
named Mary. Being fully human, Jesus is believed to have suffered the pains
and temptations of mortals but never sinned. Because Jesus is also considered
to be God incarnate He returned to life to fulfil the Messianic prophecy. The
birth of Jesus is the realization of the Old Testament prophecies about messiah
who would save the Jewish people. The coming of Jesus as the Messiah is the
underlying belief of Christianity but differs from the Jewish belief. Any one
who believes in the death and resurrection of Jesus with re-unit with God and
can be granted salvation and a life in eternity. The death and resurrection of
Jesus Christ. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is significant point in the history
of Christianity and the basis of all Christian belief. Around the age of 30, Jesus
began teaching through parables and performing miracles, with help from this
His twelve (12) disciples. When Jesus Christ claimed that He spoke to God;
officials became outraged and persecuted Him. He was eventually crucified for
being a heretic and His body was place in a tomb.
